The town is situated in the middle of a trianle created by İstanbul, Bursa and İzmir and it is considered one of the most important town in the South Marmara Region.
Bandırma ( 3 municipalities ) is a district of Balıkesir Province. It covers an area of 690 km2 with a population of 120 000. Bandırma’s rates 30th in the list of 858 districts and is amnogst the three districts that should become provinces
The district is in the TR-22 of NUTS II Regions and according to the competitiveness map in the ‘ Regional Competitiveness Operational Programme’ published by the Ministry of Industry and Trade; the potentials and needs as well as eligible interventions to be supported are as below:

The district is served by one port that has a customs clearance point. The Port is the second largest port on the Sea of Marmara. A fast Ferry to İstanbul every day of the week. A rail connection to Izmır and benefits from a comprehensive road network.
There are two industrial areas which serve 578 companies in one and 82 in the other. Next to this there are large factories which are internationally competitive as well as factories that serve the domestic market. These include:

Banvit - poultry internationally
Şeker Piliç - poultry internationally
Nearly all of the industrial sector in Bandırma is composed of manufacture industry. In recent years large investments have been made in the poultry sector. There have been developments in marble quarrying, production of agricultural machines and in the tomato sauce sector. 65% of the total area of Bandırma is suitable for agricultural production. A large variety of agricultural produce is grown.

15% of chemical compost, 25% of edible chicks and 20% of eggs for breeding chicks in Turkey are produced in Bandırma.
Products that are export/imported from the port:
* Export: industrial products, quarry products, poultry meat, eggs, sea and water products.
* Import: 70% of industrial raw materials, consumer goods and minerals.
The Faculty of Economics and Management and three colleges ( Nursing, Import and Export, Winged Animals) connected to the University of Balıkesir are established in the district. 25% of the population are graduates.
