Though it is not exactly known, historians date back the foundation of the city to B.c. 8-9. It is a port located in South Marmara Sea. Before Turks, the west part of Anatolia, known as Asia Minor, lived Mysians ( more to the west ) and Frigians ( more to South ). Kyzikos, the king of Dolion, came from Thessalia to the region called “Arkton Oros” ( the mountain of bears ) and founded the city Kyzikos on B.C. 1250. This city was an important center of the time. Bandırma was very close to this city and was called Panarmos meaning “safe harbor” in Grek. This was the region called Mysia, extending from Çanakkale to İzmir.
According to other sources, the name Bandırma comes from the boracite mine, which has the ore named pandermit. This accounts for one of the older names being “Panderma”.
Being conquered by Alexander the Great in B.C. 334, the city has gone under the auspices of the Roman Empire and then Byzantium Empire, after the division of the Roman Empire. The reign of Turks began after Kutalmışoğlu Süleyman Bey conquered Kyzikos with Aydıncık and Bandırma in 1076. From 1076 to 1106, Bandırma was under Seljuks, but after the Seljuk Sultan 1. Kılıçarslan died, it went under the Byzantium Empire again. After going under the Otoman Reign in 1354, the name Panarmos was changed to Bandırma again.
The city had a great fire in 1874 and was rebuilt right away. During the Otoman-Russian war in 1876-1878, the Tatars migrated from Romania and Crimea were settled in the region. This development made the town more active and the municipality was founded.
After being occupied by the Allies in 1920 and rescued in 1922, and the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, it received its current administrative structure whereas the migrants from Greece in 1924 and 1936 gave the city its current sociological structure.
Geographically, it is located on 40° 21’ 30” latitude and 27° 48’ 59” longitude. It is 599 square kilometer and its altitude is 1 meter to 764 meter from the sea level. The gulf is 31 kilometers long.
The land being basically plain is hilly from North to South. The highest mountain is named Karadağ and it is 764 meters high. Kapıdağ is a peninsula between gulf of Bandırma and gulf of Erdek.
The longest river in Bandırma is Eğridere, the others being Beyderesi, Çayırdere, Eski Sığırcı, Anıkaltı and Karadere, Karaçalılık.
